CROSS: ESTATE - ANTIQUE Early 1900's - HUGE & Very Fine Workmanship 14k Filigree Crucifix Necklace. HUGE Ornate Crucifix In Original Box - Original Family Consignor A really spectacular piece, with incredible workmanship, this dates back to the early 1900's. It is still in the original jewelers box from Diener Hermanos - La Perla - 38 Avenida de San Francisco 38, Mexico City, which we find listed on page 728 of The London Gazette, 11 January 1918. The necklace portion alone measures 37". Doubled, (as worn), and measured from top of necklace to tip of crucifix the length is 25.5". The cross itself measures 98mm long by 67mm wide. The piece weighs 75.6 grams. The gold has been acid tested at 14k. We note that a small section of filigree is missing from the topmost portion of the back side of the crucifix. We do not find it to be noticible without a detailed close-up examination. Earrings which complimented the piece had been purchased at the same time this piece was acquired, but we find only one has made it through the years. There are a handful of pieces (pictured) which will accompany this sale, that might possibly be employed by a skilled artisan to either recreate the earrings or to replace the small section of missing filigree on the back of the crucifix. UNIQUE SILVER ITEMS

THE BASICS OF STERLING SILVER FLATWARE: Composed of a mixture of 92.5 percent pure silver and 7.5 percent other metals (including copper, for added strength), sterling silver is the most precious of all flatware metals. Because of the high content of silver, it is the heaviest of all flatware. Sterling silver is a lifetime investment. It’s designed to be used day after day, year after year and can be passed down from one generation to another. The way you plan to entertain will help determine the number of pieces that will comprise your place settings. A standard four-piece flatware place setting consists of a dinner fork, dinner knife, salad/dessert fork and teaspoon. For a five-piece setting, add a soup spoon, and a six-piece setting includes a butter spreader. Whether you prefer ornate or simple flatware, you'll find it a pleasure to coordinate the look of all your tableware to create well-balanced, elegant table settings.

WHY VINTAGE STERLING? Vintage Sterling Silver flatware is being collected today either to replace missing pieces of heirloom sets, or in lieu of buying new patterns, by those who admire and appreciate the style and quality of the vintage sterling ware.

Vintage Sterling Silver Flatware pieces were often better made and had heavier silver content.

STERLING SILVER FLATWARE FROM THE ART DECO ERA:

ART DECO :
Art Deco is a decorative style that is essentially an extension of the French Art Nouveau and English Aesthetic styles, but also includes elements of Arts and Crafts form. The term Art Deco is used to describe a design style that originated around World War I, and runs through to World War II (c. 1915-1945). Art Deco styling drew together various elements, such as structured floral motifs, stylized curves, geometric shapes and abstract patterns.

In womens fashion during the same period, hemlines began to climb from ankle length in 1910, to mid-calf by 1919, and finally reached the knee by 1925, just in time for the Roaring Twenties.

LATE ART DECO, the period from 1930 - 1946, emphasized romance and allure. Womens hemlines dropped again to just above the ankles, and longer dresses with bare backs were in vogue for evening wear.

Gentlemen of the Art Deco era were seen as sophisticated and debonaire. Actor Cary Grant attired in a tuxedo was perhaps the personification of suave sophistication during the Art Deco era. Grant, (1904 - 1986) whose film career began in the early 1930's, was hosted at dinner parties (both onscreen and off) featuring breathtakingly beautiful tables set with fine sterling silver flatware. Entertain in style. Do it with fine vintage sterling.
