Ideological purity. Compromise as weakness. A fundamentalist belief in scriptural literalism. Denying science. Unmoved by facts. Undeterred by new information. A hostile fear of progress. A demonization of education. A need to control women's bodies. Severe xenophobia.Tribal mentality. Intolerance of dissent. Hatred of U.S. government.

They can call themselves the "Tea Party". They can call themselves conservatives. They can even call themselves Republican. Though Republicans certainly shouldn't.

ABOVE: Tom Nielsen, a 71-year-old retired plumber from Kenosha, Wisconsin was thrown to the ground, placed in handcuffs, and arrested after objecting to Republican VP nominee Congressman Paul Ryan's plans to gut Social Security and Medicare. Ryan was speaking at an August 2012 $15 Rotary Club luncheon.

Nielsen found himself face down on the floor being handcuffed by police, even though he repeatedly told police that he wasn't fighting them and that he didn't want to make any trouble. He also told them several times that he had a broken shoulder. Police officers ignored his comments as they wrestled him to the ground despite his howls of pain.

Congressman Ryan and his Republican guests found it amusing.
